What does a researcher do in the media industry?

As a researcher, you would support producers be finding the information, people and places for media texts.

Your tasks would vary depending on the type of programme you were working on, but might include:

  • Discussing programme ideas and research needs with producers
  • Finding and checking information, using sources such as the internet, libraries and museums
  • Searching media libraries and archives for music, photography and film footage etc.

General information on eating disorders

http://www.b-eat.co.uk/AboutEatingDisorders

this website helps to give an outline of eating disorders, what consists of, what the causes and effects are and the people it affects and also shows the stories and the way the media can add to the pressure of the eating disoreders .

http://www.annecollins.com/teen-eating-disorders.htm

this website would be highly beneficially for an added amount of realistic facts because it has statistical information, a more personal insight into what teenagers are really thinking by having a FAQ  page which has questions outlining the key points to teens about eating problems and also suggesting help and advice for victims.

http://search.bbc.co.uk/search?q=teenage+eating+disorders&uri=%2Fhealth%2Fhealthy_living%2Fnutrition%2Flife_adolescence1.shtml

the BBC has a broad and vase amount of information for eating disorders from bullying being linked to eating disorders , under eating, disorders from as low an age as 6,and life stories of teens with eating disorders and there recovery process for it.

BROADCAST

clips for the format of different lifestyle programmes targeted at teenagers :

Channel 4 Documentaries

channel 4- the hospital – teenage obesity

channel 4 – my crazy life- telling the world im HIV

i think the way in which this documentary is shown to the teenage audience is highly informative; in giving you factual insight into teen situation with realiable figures, facts and so on. but yet it is very simple in getting the teenage opinions and feeling across.

i like the style of product  is very simple but effective with the informative voice over and coherent background music. the way the filming is done is highly effective to, with the personal filming of characters involved with a mix of following them around in there daily lives with focuses on the subject at hand.

BBC3 Documentaries

bbc3- world strictest parents-lebanon

i think that the format of this programme is very informative through the context of the characters and the situation that they are in, there is little narrative involved which shows that there must have been alot of filming hours and editting involved in production of the text.

ITV2 Documentaries

itv2- fearn and …paris hilton

this documentary that follows celebrities on there daily life and finding out things that have not been shown to us in the media. i think the layout of these documentaries are very personal and close, with having fearn cotton doing the narration and following the celebrities around. i also think tyhat it give a more bias side towards her opinion on there lives.

Lifestyle Broadcast I’ve Looked At

a movie on anorexia and the realtion to school life

a movie on anorexia and the realtion to school life

This film follows the story of protagonist Nancy, played by actress Tracey Gould (herself in recovery from an eating disorder), after her graduation from high school. She heads off to college and, anxious about her future, begins to isolate herself. Her anxiety channels itself into obsession over food and weight. She starts to exercise compulsively and gradually eats less and less. Her parents fail to acknowledge the enormous changes in their daughter until Christmas, when her anorexia can be ignored no longer. Attempts to get her help are met with fierce resistance from Nancy herself until at last, her father decides to take her to court and win guardianship of Nancy so he can force her into treatment.

thin

The HBO Documentary film Thin follows four women from ages 15 to 30 years old as they undergo treatment at Renfrew Center, a residential treatment facility specializing exclusively in eating disorder recovery. Their perpetual personal battles between recovery and relapse are heart-wrenching, the relationships formed between them intense and complex. Director Lauren Greenfield manages to look beyond the emaciation of the patients and the restrictively scheduled program into the “meat” of the matter. What causes eating disorders? Is recovery possible? What does it look like? And how can we stem the growing numbers of young anorexics and bulimics?

dying to be thin

dying to be thin video clip

This NOVA documentary introduces us to eating disordered individuals from all walks of life: dancers, gymnasts, students, sisters, daughters, friends. Examining the causes behind, as well as the experience of, anorexics and bulimics today, this program also goes behind the scenes in the research labs and medical facilities where possible treatments for these debilitating illnesses are being studied.

i think this domcumentry is really good because it covers a vast majority of eating disorders in all walks of life.

Teen vogue

by seeing the blogging that is done on the teen vogue website you can see that they already cover lifestyle topics in my area of choice which is assuring because it shows that the reader is aware of teen vogue’s approach anorexia in the youth audience.

web-teen-vogueRavi-Gavron-Teen-Vogue-inkheart-series-2957133-457-635

this is a typical layour for a teen vogue article. it is normally set out in a two collumn guidline with the conventional red, white and black style.rhe font is quite bold so that fills the space,it always has a few pictures of the related subject that is being described, there is qite alot of overlapping to keep the reader interested in figuring out what is being said so they are engaged in the article at hand.there style of writing is very simple but contains the right information that they are trying to get across.

i thought that this magazine would appeal to an teenage female audience because it is well known in the print industry and within the female adolescent are. the magazine layout is conventional, but it is still eye catching and interesting to the consumer.it also contains a lot of current affairs within a teenagers life e.g fashion, celebrities, beauty etc. which also displays that it is very vast in it interests and gives a wide range of information.

GQ

 GQ-Article

the codes and conventions of a GQ double spread article : it is normally set out in a three collumn guidline. it uses bold colours in blocks with a white background and a smaller black background, but that is becaue ther is quite alot of imaes on the page so the reader doesnt feel like the information on the page is overbearing or too factual in a way .

i thought that this magazine would appeal to a  young male audience because of it focus on todays trends, fashion, beauty and  health consuss individuals. as i quote for themselves “Target audience: Sophisticated males  with a desire for style. Success with style has always been the ethos around which GQ was created, a provocative mix of the very best writing, strong visuals and an unrivalled sense of achievement, intelligence and irreverence, the ultimate urban men’s tip-sheet. It’s the pinnacle of the premium men’s lifestyle magazine market and covers style, culture, entertainment, tech, health, sport, luxury and life.”

Discuss how the film fits into its given genre

Filed under: Uncategorized — jennifercole at 2:43 pm on Friday, October 9, 2009

The  film The Matrix is a repertoire of elements from a hybrid of genres merely because of the postmodernism of today’s film industry, of making a mixture of genres because everything has already been done. This gives producers and writer a wider range to get inspiration from because they have less boundaries that would contain them if they where to do one genre because of its set codes and conventions. But not saying that this hybrids don’t follow a set path and by outline the narrative, iconography, characters and setting I will be able to justify why these films fit into its given genre.

The matrix I would say falls into the genre of being a Sci-Fi/ Action this is signified using the genre theory. The narrative of this film is basically a man living two lives who questions his reality .he finds himself targeted by the police. a legendary computer hacker branded a terrorist by the government awakens this man to the real world, a ravaged wasteland where most of humanity have been captured by a race of machines which live off of their body heat and imprison their minds within an artificial reality known as the Matrix. he must return to the Matrix and confront the agents, super powerful computer programs devoted to cancelling the entire human rebellion.

The iconography in this film helps to build the genre firstly one distinct message in the matrix is the computer codes that scroll up and down the screen in a luminous green colour gives us the sense of an unknown which think sci-fi always represents. Also the colour emits the sense of the extra terrestrial activities being involved. You also get quite a few action iconography, one that can be pointed out are guns that is familiar in action films which is used within the normal human characters which shows their power and authority and there readiness to fight back.

the types of characters used in this film have a good mix of the genre that it fits into. firstly there is a female character called Trinity, she is strong which would conventionally be the role of a male character, she is able to fight to an expected level of a action film star, but is still able to keep her womanly sex appeal that none of the other characters can bring, she then brings the elements of sci-fi with her knowledge of the computer hacking world  and out of this world movements e.g her jumping across sky rise building

Also by the setting of the film you get the visual mesaage of the genre from the fight sense in the derellic building, running down the back alleys, jumping across sky high city buildings in the mist of night .

i think that the producers have presented the genre of this film through the theory of NICS very well. its has all the aspect of the hybrid genre to be said to be a sci-fi/action movie, it comes to show that new things in the media can be made by just breaking out of the codes and convention of main stream institutionalised media.
